Rioja

Rioja has long held a virtual monopoly in the production of wines. Until 80th twentieth century this region produced all the main Spanish wines. Until the early nineties, began to emerge Rioja competition from Ribera del Duero region, Priorito, etc. The production of wines from other regions forces Rioja region to be better, so it's no wonder that this area received in 1991 as only one the highest degree of national awards, called Denominación de origen calificada (DOCa).
